Position SummaryThe Office of Institutional Effectiveness (IE) and School for Continuing and Professional Studies (CAPS) are partnering to create a shared data analyst position to provide analytic and data support to CAPS. Under the direction of the Senior Director of Institutional Effectiveness, the Statistical Data Analyst II provides analysis using internal and external data sources to support the planning and execution of school-wide analysis and special projects. The position provides analytical reporting, issue tracking/management, status reporting/management, and other analysis to support academic planning and other school operations that may include admissions and recruitment, demographics, research activity, financial aid, surveys, and post-graduation outcome data for WashU Continuing and Professional Studies (CAPS). Partners and works alongside various teams, assisting in the development and execution of integrated projects across CAPS.

While the data analyst will be a member of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, they will be 100% dedicated to CAPS’ data and analytic needs. The analyst will work in close collaboration with the IE team, which is within of the Office of the Provost. The IE team (specifically the Institutional Research team) will provide analytic and quality assurance support and guidance to the analyst. They will provide support and feedback on newly developed visualizations, analyses, and other products. The Senior Director and team will provide coaching and mentorship to the analyst to ensure they are successful in this role.

The analyst will have office space at Sever Hall, where the IE team is located. The analyst’s primary point of contact at CAPS is the Associate Dean/Chief of Staff who will provide subject matter expertise and guidance on CAPS’s needs and priorities. CAPS and IE will work together, in partnership with the analyst, to ensure the success of the analyst and in meeting the needs of CAPS.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Reporting, Research, and Data Analysis

  • Refines and expands core suite of analytic reports & dashboards (visualizations, predictive models, etc.) that are designed to translate data into usable, actionable information for the formation and execution of strategies and measures of success.
  • Plans, develops, and ensures the effective implementation of strategies for the identification, retrieval, and manipulation of data from multiple, disparate systems and data sources to perform analysis, assessment, and reporting necessary to make decisions to support strategic initiatives, program development, external reporting, and ongoing projects and decision making.
  • Answers critical strategic questions, with emphasis in academic program assessment, school operations and budget, and student and alumni data by managing small- and large-scale data and research projects and communicating findings in the form of data tables, data visualizations, presentations and reports. Presents accurate, complete and concise recommendations to leadership based on research and analysis outcomes.
  • Develops monthly and periodic reports and interactive dashboards that respond to user requests for data and meet information needs through standard reports and queries.
  • Provides timely and accurate ad hoc reports.
  • Advocate and educator to help all members of the CAPS staff frame operational and academic program questions with data.

Collaboration and Project Work

  • Participates in current and future state analysis, development, and deployment of organizational improvement initiatives.
  • Partners with CAPS staff across different units to ensure access and tracking capabilities of CAPS data for internal metrics and analysis with knowledge and understanding of continuing education best practices.
  • Provides support to all accreditation and compliance activities; monitors and maintains accurate accreditation-related data for CAPS programs.
  • Participates in the relevant IE and CAPS team meetings. Keeps an open line of communication to the Senior Director and CAPS Associate Dean/Chief of Staff.

Data Infrastructure Development and Maintenance

  • Evaluates current data management infrastructure and develops information retrieval and analysis processes, automating where possible; leads the implementation of processes necessary to ensure consistent, accurate and timely data aligned across the organization.
  • Curates a data warehouse of essential data to develop and maintain dashboards and models.
  • As CAPS Tableau site administrator, establishes site organization, maintains site users, and audits site’s active reports and dashboards.
  • Develops and implements strategies for improving data quality, expanding data collection in various dimensions, and meeting diverse and fast-changing needs.
  • Conducts audits of established data analytics frameworks and outputs to ensure continued usability.
  • Develops and maintains expertise in reporting tools and systems to ensure reliable, verifiable and consistently retrievable data across the organization.

Other Duties

  • Serves on and contributes to committees supporting data management policies and changes for university initiatives, ensuring standards and practices are aligned with WashU priorities and possibilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or combination of education in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Analytics, or a related field with two years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access or SQL. 
  • Experience with report writing and BI tools (e.g. Tableau, Cognos).
  • Advanced degree preferred with over five years of experience in data analysis and reporting and/or related experience.
  • Experience in an university environment, especially in reporting and data analysis.  
  • Experience with WashU Financial/Administrative/Student information systems (e.g. Workday, SIS).
  • Experience using databases or other electronic systems for tracking, reporting, and managing information.
  • Understanding of SQL and query and reporting analysis.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Access and project management software, e.g. Confluence.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and reporting methodologies.
  • Able to work under pressure to handle a wide variety of tasks with discretion and maintain a balance among priorities. 
  • Able to work collaboratively and effectively to establish and maintain working relationships within a diverse environment.   
  • Commitment to completing tasks with great attention to detail and accuracy, balanced with an ability to meet deadlines.

Salary Range$53,100.00 - $90,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
