Data Engineer

Overview

The Data Engineer I is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining robust data solutions using Snowflake and Azure cloud services. This role plays a key part in ensuring data availability, integrity, and scalability across Cavender’s enterprise data ecosystem. The Data Engineer I will work closely with architects, analysts, and cross-functional teams to support business decision-making through efficient data pipelines, automation, and optimization efforts. Reporting to the Manager of Business Intelligence and Analytics, this position offers continuous learning opportunities in a dynamic, cloud-first environment and contributes to the integrity and performance of the company’s growing data infrastructure.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the “Cavender’s Culture” and drive our Mission, Vision, and Values
  • Build and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines for structured and unstructured data using Snowflake and Azure Data Services
  • Design and integrate data from multiple sources to support analytics, reporting, and scalable data models
  • Set up and manage Snowflake environments and Azure data infrastructure to ensure high availability and security
  • Optimize queries, pipelines, and storage to improve performance and reduce cost
  • Implement and maintain data governance controls including auditing, access control, and data retention policies
  • Collaborate with data architects and business teams to gather data requirements and deliver solutions
  • Promote automation and CI/CD best practices through tools such as Azure DevOps
  • Document data workflows, architecture, and pipeline specifications
  • Monitor data pipeline performance and proactively address data quality issues or system failures
  • Research and incorporate new tools, techniques, and best practices for Snowflake and Azure ecosystems
  • Develop validation and quality assurance frameworks to ensure reliable and accurate data delivery
  • Plan for growth and performance demands by managing data infrastructure scalability
  • Provide technical support and guidance to analysts and team members on Snowflake and Azure data tools
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by IT leadership

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience designing and maintaining data solutions on Snowflake and Azure platforms
  • Proficiency with MS SQL, SSIS, SSMS, PL/SQL, Oracle DB, and Snowflake
  • Strong skills in SQL, Python, or similar languages for data pipeline development
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Databricks, and Blob Storage
  • Deep understanding of ETL/ELT, data warehousing, and data modeling concepts
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as Azure DevOps for automated deployment
  • Ability to troubleshoot and optimize data processing and performance issues
  • Experience with data quality management tools and practices
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Certifications in Snowflake or Azure Data Services are a plus
  • Knowledge of big data technologies like Apache Spark or Kafka is a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Self-motivated, independent, and collaborative team player
  • Commitment to deadlines, project budgets, and meeting business expectations
  • Based in Tyler, TX at our home office; must reside in the East Texas

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of merchandising systems, D365 financial applications, and integration tools like Logic Apps, Boomi, and Azure Service Bus
  • Experience working in a retail environment
