The opportunity 

As a Staff Optical Software Engineer on Magic Leap's Optical Engineering team, you will collaborate with an experienced cross-functional team to develop and manufacture innovative, leading-edge optical components for Augmented Reality (AR) devices. Our team cultivates a dynamic, collaborative environment that champions engineering excellence, creativity, and groundbreaking innovation across interdisciplinary domains including:

- Optical metrology and testing
- Device fabrication
- Display technologies
- Image processing
- Color sciences

Location: Austin, TX office with regular on-site presence. Relocation assistance provided.

What you’ll do 

  • Architect cutting-edge test metrics, stations, and alignment systems for prototype AR display components, enabling precise measurement of image quality, radiometric, and colorimetric performance
  • Develop sophisticated image processing algorithms to enhance visual performance and push the boundaries of image quality metrics
  • Design and implement scalable, robust software solutions that drive innovation across multiple technological domains
  • Pioneer automation strategies for image capture and processing, dramatically improving efficiency and experimental repeatability
  • Foster cross-team collaboration to deeply understand and optimize complex technological ecosystems

The experience you bring

  • 8+ years of industry and academic experience in Python and/or C++, with specialized expertise in:
      - Optical metrology methods
      - Camera systems
      - Imaging instrumentation
  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field preferred
  • Proven expertise in image processing and computer vision, with a track record of breakthrough approaches in display image quality assessment and feature detection
  • Exceptional software architect with a talent for designing resilient, scalable project architectures
  • Proven innovator in test automation and custom optical test system development
  • Demonstrated ability to design, execute, and draw meaningful insights from complex optical experiments
  • Master of critical analysis, capable of troubleshooting advanced optical metrology tools and delivering statistically rigorous performance evaluations

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Advanced proficiency with computer vision libraries (OpenCV, SciPy, Pillow)
  • Experience developing intuitive, user-centric GUI applications
  • Deep understanding of color science and colorimetry
  • Background in AR/VR technology innovation

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location. In addition to salary, Magic Leap offers a discretionary bonus, equity, and a fully comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees.

US Base Salary Range$120,000—$155,000 USD
