The Hartford is seeking a Director of Analytical Engineering. This leadership role is crucial for guiding a team of engineers to improve our analytical tools, automate metric monitoring, and refine our hypothesis testing processes. These enhancements will empower our analysts to generate faster, deeper, and more actionable insights for our partners. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in modern analytics and data engineering, along with a passion for innovation and continuous improvement.

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near one of our locations will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office should maintain their current work arrangement with the expectation of coming into the office as business needs arise.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of data engineers to create significant improvements for our claim performance analysts, driving more actionable insights for our partners.
  • Develop and execute on a multi-year roadmap to automate and augment our analytical process, leveraging the latest analytical tools and passive metric monitoring where possible.
  • Coach a team of business facing analytical engineers that curate new metrics and characteristics in support of ad-hoc partners requests and enhance hypothesis testing.
  • Drive statistical, machine learning, and AI upskilling across the performance analytics team. Stay up to date on emerging approaches by attending conferences and developing strong partnerships with key data science and enterprise data partners.
  • Coordinate activities with cross-functional IT unit stakeholders (e.g., database, operations, telecommunications, technical support, etc.)
  • Work dynamically, helping to support day-to-day responsibilities, prioritizing new requests, and ensuring progress is made on our strategic investments.
  • Work closely with the enterprise data services group’s dedicated team that maintains our data products to collaborate and prioritize on critical enhancements needed to produce better insights.



Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in Claims data and analytics is recommended.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics or a related field.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, teaching, and peer influencing skills.
  • Able to translate complex technical topics into business solutions and strategies as well as turn business requirements into a technical solution.
  • Experience implementing statistical methods including hypothesis testing, regression, sample size determination, and analysis of variance. Additional experience building an implementing machine learning algorithms is a plus.
  • Experience operating within an Agile framework, including rapid prototyping, learning fast, and scaling to maximize value added.
  • Experience with leading project execution and driving change to core business processes through the innovative use of quantitative techniques.
  • Data wrangling experience using MS SQL Server, Oracle SQL Developer, Apache Spark SQL, Snowflake expertise in programming languages like SQL, Python etc.
  • Experience in Unix and Git, automation tools (Autosys, Cron, Airflow, etc.), and AWS Services (i.e. S3, EMR, etc.).
  • Stay up to date on emerging analytical and AI trends, attending conferences, and driving thought leadership to enhance organizational impact and visibility.
  • Role may involve infrequent travel
  • Candidate must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$156,000 - $234,000
